Ook mannen kunnen een panty dragen, maar je ziet het kledingstuk toch vooral om vrouwenbenen zitten. En dat terwijl de eerste panty's voor mannen waren bedoeld. Hoe is het kledingstuk ontstaan?

De eerste panty's: van 'hosen' naar wollen sok

De eerste ‘panty’s’ werden gemaakt van geweven stof, en leken op een legging met voeten. Deze ‘hosen’ (nog steeds het Duitse woord voor broek) werd vooral gedragen door mannen, onder een tuniek of pofbroek. Rijke dames droegen lange zijden kousen, die dankzij sokophouders of jarretels bleven zitten.Vanaf de zestiende eeuw werden hosen minder gedragen door heren. Na de uitvinding van de breimachine stapten mannen massaal over op wollen sokken, die nog wel met een jarretel of sokophouder omhoog werden gehouden.

De eerste panty was voor een zwangere vrouw

Pas in de jaren dertig van de twintigste eeuw vond het Amerikaanse chemiebedrijf DuPont nylon uit, een sterk, dun en rekbaar materiaal. Dat werd verwerkt in de randen van wollen kousen, zodat deze zonder ophouder bleven zitten.

In 1959 vond de Amerikaanse stoffenfabrikant Allen E. Gant de panty uit zoals we die nu kennen. Zijn zwangere vrouw Ethel werd knettergek van de jarretelgordel om haar bolle buik. Grant naaide daarop haar kousen aan een onderbroek (panties). Vrouwlief was zo in haar nopjes, dat Grant het prototype naar een kleermaker bracht. Die knutselde net zolang met combinaties van wol en nylon, tot er een rekbare 'broek' met voeten ontstond. En voilà: de panty zoals we hem nu kennen was geboren.

 

Gebruik altijd speciale handschoenen voor panty's en kousen om aan te trekken zodat je er langer plezier van hebt, en er geen haaltjes door nagels kunnen ontstaan.
